Saying Goodbye to Our Friend and Hero

Earlier this week, I joined my colleagues in Congress to say goodbye to Congressman John Lewis. Congressman Lewis was a titan, a hero, and a friend. He was a gentle but powerful soul that taught us to never give up and dedicated his life to fight for justice and for a more equal union.

Those of us fortunate to know him were blessed by his presence in our lives and our country is better because of him. I am so incredibly humbled to have had the privilege to learn from him and I trust his leadership and light will continue to guide us.

Attorney General Barr Testifies to the
House Judiciary Committee

On July 28th, I questioned United States Attorney General William Barr during a House Judiciary Committee hearing entitled “Oversight of the Department of Justice.”

From the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program to LGBTQ rights, the Department of Justice under President Trump and Attorney General Barr has refused to implement key Supreme Court rulings. This unprecedented politicization of the Department of Justice must end. Watch my remarks here.

The Military’s #MeToo Hearing

On July 29th, the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Military Personnel held a hearing entitled, “The Military’s #MeToo Movement: An Examination of Sexual Harassment and Perceived Retaliation in the Department of Defense and at Fort Hood.”

The powerful testimony from veterans, survivors, and military officials, shed light on the continuing epidemic of sexual harassment in our military due to a fear of retaliation and the absence of accountability. Far too often, victims of military sexual trauma are not taken seriously, have their sincerity or certainty questioned, and are left without answers, full investigations, or justice. Our military cannot continue to fail our brave survivors like they failed SPC Vanessa Guillen. Servicemembers who put their lives on the line for our country deserve better.
