Last week, I had the opportunity to meet with our region's government entities and some key non-profit organizations to discuss their successes in 2023 and their plans for 2024 to ensure our community secures as much federal funding as possible for projects and services for our constituents.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has selected UTEP as a lead organization for the first-ever NSF Regional Innovation Engines and will be receiving $15 million!
This funding will continue to advance critical technology development, stimulate economic growth and job creation, and counter the 'brain drain' in our community.

The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center was recently awarded $480,000 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute under the Blood Diseases and Resources Research Program.

Since House Democrats passed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, there have been nearly 40,000 projects announced in 4,500 communities across the country. During a House Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee hearing on "The State of Transportation," Democrats highlighted federal investments being implemented in their communities and the impact of this legislation.

The U.S. Department of Labor announced a $12 million funding opportunity for organizations to provide training and employment services to help veterans combat homelessness.
The HVRP will provide awarded organizations with a maximum of

$600,000 annually for up to three years, for a total of $1.8 million. Awarded organizations will help deliver occupational skills training, support participation in registered apprenticeship programs or other on-the-job training opportunities, and supply employment placement assistance.

The EPA is extending the 2023 CSB application window to appropriately engage with partners like utilities and school boards ahead of submitting an application.
The EPA is offering $500 million for electric, propane, and compressed natural gas school buses through the CSB Program! Don’t miss out on the opportunity to receive up to $345,000 per bus to help make the transition to clean school buses!

Service Coordinators in Multifamily Housing (SCMF) Discretionary FY24 Deadline: March 14, 2024
(SCMF) program supports service coordinator positions for elderly individuals and non-elderly persons with disabilities living in HUD-assisted housing. Services may include nutrition support, housekeeping and shopping assistance, coordination with healthcare providers, help accessing public benefits, financial management assistance, and other services that support Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs) including services for persons with severe disabilities.

Community Change Technical Assistance Informational Webinar Series
The Community Change Technical Assistance Program (CCTA) is excited to announce it will be holding a series of informational webinars on the Community Change Grants Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) beginning January 30th!
EnDyna, EPA’s Technical Assistance contractor, together with expert partners and members of EPA’s Office of Environmental Justice and External Civil Rights, will lead webinars reviewing NOFO content and requirements, explaining available technical assistance, and answering questions about the grant application process.

Residents of El Paso and Hudspeth Counties Invited to Take Climate Action Planning Community Survey
The public is invited to provide input on the Region’s Priority Climate Action Plan (PCAP) now through Friday, February 9, 2024.
In July 2023, the El Paso Region was awarded a $1M grant, under the EPA´s Climate Pollution Reduction Grants program that will help El Paso develop and implement its first Climate Action Plan focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and other harmful air pollution and addressing climate-related vulnerabilities. The city started developing the Climate Action Plan in the fall of 2023 and expects to finalize it by 2025.
