Dear [firstname],

Last week, the House of Representatives took important action to address systemic racism and police brutality and passed H.R. 7120, the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2020.

It has been over a month since we witnessed the brutal murder of George Floyd, which became a tipping point for our country. Americans took to the streets to demand change and meaningful reform to policing. I am proud to have co-sponsored the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act and voted for this legislation.

George Floyd Justice in Policing Act

The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act is the first-ever, bold comprehensive approach to hold police accountable, end racial profiling, change the culture of law enforcement, empower our communities, and build trust between law enforcement and our communities by addressing systemic racism to bias to help save lives.

The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act will establish a national standard for the operation of police departments, mandate data collection on police encounters, reprogram existing funds to invest in transformative community-based policing programs, and streamline federal law to prosecute excessive force and establish independent prosecutors for police investigations. To learn more about the major components of this bill, click here.

In Congress and in our communities, we have an obligation to rise to this moment, act to honor the victims, and create the meaningful, structural changes that our nation needs. I am proud to support this legislation that begins our journey towards true reform in El Paso and across the country. This work is long overdue, and George Floyd deserves no less.

Let’s Work Together on Police Accountability

I listened to your feedback on this important issue in order to work together towards building a more just and fair community. On June 16, 2020, I hosted a virtual town hall on Police Accountability and the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. I was joined by Congresswoman Karen Bass (CA-37), Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, and Pastor Michael Grady from the Prince of Peace Church. If you would like to watch our town hall, please click here.

On June 26, 2020, I hosted a virtual conversation with Marc H. Morial, President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Urban League. We discussed how local governments can strengthen police accountability and community oversight. If you would like to watch our virtual conversation, please click here

We must continue to work together so that another senseless murder by law enforcement does not happen again. Please share your ideas on how we can build more just and fair communities here. I will continue to report on my work directly to you. Thank you for the privilege of serving you during these difficult times in American history.

Sincerely,

Veronica Escobar
Member of Congress
