Dear [firstname],

One year ago, our community and the nation were shocked and heartbroken by the horrific act of domestic terrorism fueled by racism and xenophobia that killed 23 beautiful souls, injured 22, and devastated all of us.

Today has been painful for our community, especially for the survivors and the loved ones of those who were killed, but as we grieve and heal together apart, we must continue to face hate with love and confront xenophobia by treating the stranger with dignity and hospitality.

El Paso families have the right to live free from fear, and I will continue to honor the victims and survivors with action; fighting to end the gun violence and hate epidemics that plague our nation.

El Paso Strong: Combatting Hate with Action Town Hall

In light of the first anniversary of the El Paso shooting, I’m hosting a virtual town hall called, “El Paso Strong: Combatting Hate with Action” on Friday, August 7, 2020 at 11 am MT.

Join me and national experts to honor the victims and survivors and discuss what Congress is doing to end gun violence and domestic terrorism in the Unites States.

Guests:
Congressman Joaquin Castro, Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus

Peter Ambler, Executive Direction and Co-Founder of Giffords

Shannon Watts, Founder of Moms Demand Action

Catherina E. Lhamon, Chair of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights

Margaret Huang, President and CEO of the Southern Poverty Law Center

The town hall is free and open to the public, and ASL interpretation will be provided. El Pasoans can submit questions here and join this important conversation on Facebook Live

Healing Together Apart

Unfortunately, the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic continues to sweep across our community and we must take care as we mourn the 23 lives lost.

Many El Pasoans are dealing with compound trauma, but we will continue to be El Paso Strong and come together to support one another during these difficult times. Here are a few activities you and your loved ones can participate in safely:

  • Visit Ponder Park to place a commemorative orange ribbon in remembrance of the victims today between 4:00-7:00 p.m. MT;
  • Drive through the Luminaria Remembrance Drive-thru at Ascarate Park today, between 8:30-11:00 p.m. MT; or
  • Participate in Act of Kindness Day and take time to perform a kind gesture for another person today.
