Congresswoman Escobar Statement on House Vote to Protect LGBTQ Individuals Against Discrimination

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (TX-16) issued the following statement after the House of Representatives passed H.R. 5, the Equality Act. This legislation ensures that all LGBTQ individuals are granted the full protections guaranteed by federal civil rights law by extending anti-discrimination protections with regard to employment, education, access to credit, jury service, federal funding, housing and public accommodations:

“I am immensely proud to have voted to pass the Equality Act to finally, fully end discrimination against LGBTQ individuals in Texas and across the country. This historic legislation honors the courage and persistence of tireless advocates and reaffirms that freedom from discrimination is a fundamental civil right.

“As we prepare to mark Pride Month in El Paso and across the country, this vote reaffirms my support and commitment to defend our nation’s values of fairness and equality for all, regardless of who they are or whom they love.”
