Congresswoman Veronica Escobar Statement on HHS OIG Report Regarding Additional Family Separations

“Today’s report publicly confirms what many of us in El Paso believed: the Trump administration misled the American people."

Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (TX-16) issued the following statement in response to a Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Inspector General report which found that the Trump administration separated thousands more migrant children from their parents at the U.S. border than had been previously made public:

“Today’s report publicly confirms what many of us in El Paso believed: the Trump administration misled the American people.

“For almost one year, President Trump implemented his ‘zero tolerance’ policy, ripping thousands of children from their parents’ arms at the border. This was cruel and inhumane.

“As a member of the House Judiciary Committee, I’ll work with my colleagues to hold the Administration accountable for this immoral, un-American policy, and ensure that all children affected by this separation are immediately accounted for and reunited with their families. Furthermore, Congress must continue to hold this administration accountable for the atrocities we’ve seen committed against immigrant families, and pass legislation to prevent it from happening again.”
