Congresswoman Veronica Escobar Statement on One Year Since the Trump Administration Announced Cruel Family Separation Policy

“In the summer of 2017, the Trump administration quietly used El Paso as testing ground for its shameful family separation policy, which was publicly implemented one year ago, and that inhumanely ripped thousands of children from their parents’ arms at our southern border.

Today, Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (TX-16) issued the following statement one year after the Trump administration publicly announced the implementation of the family separation policy:

“In the summer of 2017, the Trump administration quietly used El Paso as testing ground for its shameful family separation policy, which was publicly implemented one year ago, and that inhumanely ripped thousands of children from their parents’ arms at our southern border.

“As we mark this dark day, our nation is still reeling from the consequences of President Trump’s cruel anti-immigrant agenda and incompetence. The Trump administration continues to refuse to answer Congress’ questions about the implementation and failed family reunification process, has continued the abhorrent practice, and has yet to reunite every family.

“This Congress and the courts must stand up for our what is right and our American values by holding the administration accountable for this policy. We will not rest until this practice ends and all separated children have been identified and reunited with their loved ones.”
