Congresswoman Veronica Escobar Statement in Recognition of World Refugee Day

“World Refugee Day comes this year at a time when President Trump and his administration continue their efforts to undermine the dignity and right to due process of thousands of children and families who are fleeing violence, poverty, and persecution.

Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (TX-16) issued the following statement in recognition of World Refugee Day. Congresswoman Escobar is a cosponsor of H.R. 3376, the Lady Liberty Act, a bill that supports U.S. refugee resettlement and sets the refugee admissions ceiling at a minimum of 110,000 refugees annually:

“World Refugee Day comes this year at a time when President Trump and his administration continue their efforts to undermine the dignity and right to due process of thousands of children and families who are fleeing violence, poverty, and persecution.

“The Trump administration’s erosions to the asylum process are unacceptable and do not reflect our American values and legacy as a country shaped by immigrants and refugees. Our nation has always been a safe haven and beacon of hope for migrants, and we should continue upholding this tradition by promoting the safety and well-being of all those seeking opportunity and freedom.

“Today, let’s use our voices to condemn these actions and demand the Trump administration to end its cruel policies against families at our southern border.”
