Congresswoman Escobar Statement on Cielo Vista Mall Shooting

Today, Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (TX-16) released the following statement after last night’s shooting at Cielo Vista Mall:

“Last night’s shooting at Cielo Vista Mall brought back traumatic memories for many El Pasoans. I am thankful to all the first responders who quickly and selflessly answered the call and for local leaders with whom I have stayed in close contact as new information is released.

“As our community continues to heal from the deadliest targeted attack against Latinos in modern American history, which took place minutes away from Cielo Vista, it is a tragedy and stain on our country that Americans don’t feel safe anywhere because our nation is awash in guns. This is taking a terrible toll on our nation, our first responders, our healthcare system, and our sanity.

“Last Congress, House Democrats heard the cries of the American people who wanted action. We passed legislation on gun safety, including an assault weapon ban and improved background checks.  But states like Texas moved in a more dangerous direction, loosening gun laws and flooding communities with more guns. It is as perplexing as it is unequivocally hypocritical that Governor Abbott offer his support to our community while rejecting the very solutions that will make us safer. Gun violence and bloodshed are a policy choice.

“El Pasoans should know I will relentlessly continue fighting for further gun safety measures. Despite Republican opposition, House Democrats will not stop pushing for common-sense, effective legislation aimed at curbing gun violence.

“As the news of this shooting develops, it can be difficult to process this information. It is important to remember that you are not alone. The city has trained mental health professionals available 24 hours, 7 days a week. Please call the crisis line at 915-779-1800 or visit epstrong.org for more information.”
