Congresswoman Veronica Escobar Statement on National Security Appropriations Bill Vote

“No legislation is perfect and despite the fact that this legislation includes many priorities that I have advocated for on behalf of my community, it provides funding for abhorrent practices.

Today, Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (TX-16) issued the following statement on her vote against the national security appropriations minibus, H.R. 1158, which included funding for the Department of Homeland Security:

“No legislation is perfect and despite the fact that this legislation includes many priorities that I have advocated for on behalf of my community, it provides funding for abhorrent practices.

“I can’t support legislation that legitimizes the unlawful and inhumane Remain in Mexico policy and gives President Trump a blank check. Many of the administration’s policies reflect an un-American immigration agenda and practices that many of us believe are also unlawful.

“My vote was not a rejection of the work of Democratic appropriators but a rejection of the callousness and disregard of human dignity coming from the White House and Republican-controlled Senate.”
