Congresswoman Escobar Votes Against Devastating Republican Budget Plan

Today, Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (TX-16) voted against the Republican Budget Plan, H.Con.Res. 14.

“While Donald Trump promised to lower the cost of living for Americans on day one, House Republicans just voted to increase costs and make life more difficult for hard-working Americans so they could give billionaires massive tax cuts,” said Congresswoman Escobar.  “The budget plan that was voted on this evening will cut healthcare for seniors, pregnant women, Americans with disabilities, and children; it also cuts funding that helps prevent food insecurity, making life harder and more expensive for millions of our fellow citizens. If those cuts weren’t bad enough, this bill explodes our national debt by $1.6 trillion. Every single Republican - except one - chose to prioritize billionaires over their communities.”

The House Republican budget is a direct attack on middle-class Americans. It rips health care away from millions while handing more than $4.5 trillion in tax breaks to billionaire donors and big corporations.

Nearly 20 million Americans rely on the Affordable Care Act for health coverage, including 95,000 El Pasoans, and more than 72 million depend on Medicaid, including over 130,000 El Pasoans. Medicaid funds vital programs like inpatient and outpatient services, nursing facility services, home health services, transportation to medical care, and so much more.

Over 40 million Americans, including 152,000 El Pasoans, rely on SNAP to help feed their families. But this budget slashes at least $230 billion from food assistance programs, even as grocery prices remain high despite Donald Trump’s empty promises to lower costs on day one.

A member of the House Budget Committee, Congresswoman Escobar has been working to defeat Republicans’ harmful budget plan. During a recent 12-hour Budget Committee markup, she offered amendments to attempt to mitigate the harm Republicans would create with their cuts to key programs. This morning, she joined House Democratic Leadership for a press conference to detail the devastation the Republican budget would have on communities across America. And prior to the vote, Congresswoman Escobar spoke on the House Floor during debate on the bill, urging her Republican colleagues to work with House Democrats and put the needs of millions of Americans over billionaires.
