Congresswoman Veronica Escobar Statement on AG Barr’s Refusal to Testify Before Congress

“The purpose of today’s hearing was for the American people to know the truth about the shameless attack on our country’s integrity and democracy by a foreign adversary.

Today, Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (TX-16) issued the following statement on Attorney General William Barr’s refusal to testify before the House Judiciary Committee on the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election:

“The purpose of today’s hearing was for the American people to know the truth about the shameless attack on our country’s integrity and democracy by a foreign adversary.

“Every American, Democrat or Republican, should be concerned about the findings of Special Counsel Mueller’s report and the Attorney General’s refusal to discuss those findings before the committee. The Attorney General should be the first in line to want to get the truth to the American public.

“Instead, Attorney General Barr refused to testify and failed to provide the unredacted report and the underlying evidence to the committee, impeding our congressional authority to conduct oversight and endangering the future of our elections and democracy, raising serious doubts about his capacity to oversee the 14 cases referred for prosecution to the Department of Justice by the Special Counsel.”

“Mr. Barr’s behavior is beyond disgraceful and shows he is part of the obstruction and contempt for rule of law that has been adopted as status quo by the Trump Administration. His prejudice has no place in the Department of Justice, Mr. Barr must resign or be impeached.”
