Congresswoman Veronica Escobar Statement on Trump Administration’s Decision to Detain Migrant Children Indefinitely

“The Trump administration’s immigration plan is clear: erode asylum laws and change immigration rules in order to keep brown and black immigrants out of our country by either pushing their misery into another country, or by creating misery for them here in the United States. This pattern shows a consistent disregard for human dignity — especially that of immigrant children.

Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (TX-16) issued the following statement on the Trump administration’s decision to terminate the Flores Settlement Agreement and detain migrant children and families indefinitely:

“The Trump administration’s immigration plan is clear: erode asylum laws and change immigration rules in order to keep brown and black immigrants out of our country by either pushing their misery into another country, or by creating misery for them here in the United States. This pattern shows a consistent disregard for human dignity — especially that of immigrant children.

“The new rule announced by the Department of Homeland Security will lead to prolonged detention of families with children when we know there are less costly, more humane alternatives to detention that can and should be used. No matter how the administration might try to justify it, prolonged child detention is harmful and traumatic.

“I am hopeful that the courts will intervene to protect children’s rights and uphold our nation’s values and integrity as we fight an administration intent on using cruelty as a deterrent.”
