Congresswoman Escobar Joins Legislation to Ban Assault Weapons

Washington, D.C., June 23, 2025 | Abbey Thompson (202-225-4831)

This month, Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (TX-16) joined Representative Lucy McBath's (GA-6) Assault Weapons Ban Act of 2025. This legislation would ban certain semi-automatic weapons and high-capacity gun magazines, and is supported by 165 other Members of Congress, including 41 Senators.

"Weapons of war have no place in our neighborhoods," said Congresswoman Escobar. "Tragically, too many communities, including our own, shoulder the devastating yet preventable consequences of assault weapons."

Evidence shows that an assault weapons ban will save lives. A federal assault weapons ban was in place from 1994 until 2004, and a 2019 study found that mass shooting fatalities were 70% less likely to occur during that time. Notably, former Presidents Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and Ronald Reagan wrote a joint letter to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1994 in support of that ban.

Congresswoman Escobar has supported this legislation every Congress throughout her tenure.
