Congresswoman Escobar Signs Discharge Petition to Ban Members of Congress from Owning and Trading Stocks

Washington, D.C., December 15, 2025 | Abbey Thompson (202-225-4831)

Today, Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (TX-16) released the following statement after signing onto Discharge Petition No. 11. This would force a vote on the House floor for the Restore Trust in Congress Act, a bill to ban stock trading and ownership by Members of Congress and their family members:

"It’s long past time to ban congressional stock trading. I’m proud to be a cosponsor of HR 396  and to have signed on to the bipartisan discharge petition in the House. This is a commonsense reform that increases transparency, fights corruption and helps ensure Congress works for the people we serve — and never for ourselves.

"I've never traded stocks and as long as I'm in public office, I never will. It is my hope that the discharge petition gains more support from my colleagues so we can pass this bill and send it to the Senate.

"The American people should have representatives whose only focus is what’s in the best interests of their community, not personal financial gain.”
