Congresswoman Escobar Statement on Governor Abbott Signing Draconian Abortion Ban

Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (TX-16), Vice Chair of the Democratic Women’s Caucus (DWC), issued the following statement after Governor Greg Abbott signed a draconian six-week abortion ban: “Texas’ abortion ban is a brazen attack against women’s freedom to make decisions about their own bodies. This illegal and draconian ban would restrict abortion as early as six weeks – before most women even know they are pregnant – make no exception for victims of rape or incest, and criminalize doctors or any individual who helps a woman access abortion services. “Abortion is health care. Women in Texas and across the nation have the constitutional right to basic reproductive health care, and I will continue to fight the Republicans’ relentless efforts to turn back the clock on women’s rights. In the upcoming weeks, I will proudly reintroduce with my colleagues the bicameral Women’s Health Protection Act to reaffirm what the Supreme Court established fifty years ago: access to abortion is a fundamental right.” ### |
