The un-American S.B.1 law is an assault on Texans’ right to vote that makes it harder and more dangerous for people to access the ballot box – especially for people of color, seniors, and people with disabilities.
Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (TX-16), member of the House Judiciary Committee, issued the following statement after Governor Greg Abbott signed S.B.1, a restrictive, anti-voter bill: “The un-American S.B.1 law is an assault on Texans’ right to vote that makes it harder and more dangerous for people to access the ballot box – especially for people of color, seniors, and people with disabilities. This anti-voter law breaks the promise of democracy and is part of Republicans’ concerted efforts to continue invoking the Big Lie in order to silence American voters. “This assault cannot go unchallenged. The House of Representatives already passed the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to protect and expand voting rights for all Americans. Now, the Senate must immediately consider these two critical pieces of legislation to fight against S.B. 1 and other harmful laws like it to preempt such escalating attacks pushed by Republicans in state legislatures across the country.”
