Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (TX-16), member of the House Armed Services Committee, attended the swearing-in ceremony of El Paso native Gabe Camarillo as the 36th Under Secretary of the United States Army.

The ceremony took place in the Pentagon and was presided by Secretary of the Army Christine Wormuth. Ahead of the ceremony, Congresswoman Escobar met with Army Under Secretary Camarillo to discuss El Paso and Fort Bliss priorities, including infrastructure, modernization, economic development opportunities, and Castner Range.

“I am proud to have joined Gabe Camarillo as he starts a new chapter in his life of leadership and service as the 36th Under Secretary of the Army,” said Congresswoman Escobar. “As the Army faces significant challenges, including responding to emerging threats, preventing sexual assault and harassment, and reducing military suicide, I am confident that his deep and extensive experience will allow him to continue making enduring contributions to our nation’s defense and improving the lives of our servicemembers and civilians. I look forward to working with Army Under Secretary Camarillo on issues around readiness and modernization and welcoming him back to El Paso very soon.”

In February 2021, Congresswoman Escobar led two congressional letters advocating for Under Secretary Camarillo’s historic nomination. Following these actions, President Joe Biden’s announced his nomination in July of 2021, and he was confirmed by the Senate on February 2, 2022.
