“After the hateful attack against El Paso, I was determined to return to our nation’s capital and deliver the change the victims, survivors, and thousands of communities impacted by gun violence deserve.
Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (TX-16) led the House of Representatives in a moment of silence to honor of the victims of the August 3, 2019 El Paso domestic terrorist attack.
Unfortunately, it is only too fitting that this hearing is being held in El Paso, a place that has had to endure the target painted on our backs because of anti-immigrant rhetoric, and a community that has been ground zero for the Trump administration’s cruel immigration policies.
Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (TX-16), member of the House Judiciary Committee and House Armed Services Committee, along with Congressman Gil Cisneros (CA-39), Congresswoman Jackie Speier (CA-14), Congressman Lou Correa (CA-46), Congressman Ruben Gallego (AZ-07), and Congressman Salud Carbajal (CA-24) led a letter to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Acting Director Ken Cuccinelli asking him to reconsider the new policy change impacting military families and federal employees.
“President Trump’s irresponsible decision to steal funding for vital military construction projects in the El Paso region, the U.S. and the world, is a power grab that will undermine our national security and harm the morale and quality of life of our troops.”
August 30, 2019 Press Release
“El Paso has unfortunately been ground zero for the Trump administration’s cruelty at the border. Callous policies like Remain in Mexico and family separation, the dangerous overcrowding of detention facilities, and metering have created a moral and humanitarian crisis in our country, and are corroding our American values.”
“We are concerned that the Trump administration is jeopardizing our national security by failing to take domestic terrorism seriously. In particular, this administration is failing to address white supremacist extremist violence, the leading cause of domestic terrorism.
“The Trump administration’s immigration plan is clear: erode asylum laws and change immigration rules in order to keep brown and black immigrants out of our country by either pushing their misery into another country, or by creating misery for them here in the United States. This pattern shows a consistent disregard for human dignity — especially that of immigrant children.
