Congresswoman Escobar Introduces Legislation to Establish an Office of Colonia Affairs

Today, Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (TX-16) introduced H.R. 2740, establishing an Office of Colonia Affairs within the Department of Agriculture, which will serve as a resource for colonias by providing assistance related to applicable federal programs and funding resources. This new office would also be required to submit a report to Congress that describes the infrastructure needs of colonias and recommendations for legislative or administrative action.

“Colonias across our country often lack critical infrastructure and support,” said Congresswoman Escobar. “For far too long, they’ve been overlooked for funding, resources, and representation. I’m proud of the work I’ve done to elevate the needs of families living in colonias and to increase the federal support as well. Establishing an Office of Colonia Affairs is an important component of ensuring these underserved communities have a seat at the table.”

Congresswoman Escobar has consistently fought for colonias. In December 2022, the FY23 National Defense Authorization Act included a provision authored by Congresswoman Escobar to authorize $500 million in funding for colonias over five years. In May 2021, she introduced H.R. 3238, the Colonia Infrastructure Improvement Act to address long-standing disparities faced by residents by investing $1.5 billion in drinking water, wastewater, and surface infrastructure while creating good-paying jobs.
