Congresswoman Escobar Statement on House Passage of the Lower Drug Costs Now Act

“For hard-working El Paso families, the rising costs of prescription drugs remains a real crisis that threatens their health and financial security. While Big Pharma continues to reap profits, our seniors and families are forced to pay three, four, or even ten times higher than what they charge for the same drugs in Mexico and other countries.

Today, Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (TX-16) issued the following statement after voting to pass H.R. 3, the Elijah E. Cummings Lower Drug Costs Now Act, a bold, transformative legislation to strengthen the health and financial security of El Pasoans:

“For hard-working El Paso families, the rising costs of prescription drugs remains a real crisis that threatens their health and financial security. While Big Pharma continues to reap profits, our seniors and families are forced to pay three, four, or even ten times higher than what they charge for the same drugs in Mexico and other countries.

“El Pasoans and Americans across the country deserve better, and today, I fulfilled my promise to reduce health care costs by lowering the price of prescription drugs, giving Medicare the power to negotiate directly with drug companies, reinvesting the hundreds of billions of dollars in savings in the most transformational improvement to Medicare since its creation, and making the lower drug prices negotiated by Medicare available to more than 460,000 El Pasoans.

“I want to acknowledge and thank Speaker Pelosi for her leadership in bringing forward this historic legislation that I was proud to support on behalf of my constituents.”
