Today, Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (TX-16) released the following statement after the implementation of 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada, and an additional 10% tariff on imports from China:

“President Trump promised Americans he would lower costs on ‘Day One.’ He made Americans believe electing him would begin a ‘golden age.’ Instead, his latest tariffs are the equivalent of a massive tax increase on hard-working Americans.

“His decision to begin an unnecessary trade war will most certainly increase everyone’s costs. The tariffs he’s imposed on Mexico and Canada – neighbors and allies – have tanked the stock market, hastened announcements from CEOs that they’ll raise prices, and threaten to hurt Americans who need our help in the face of rising inflation.

“Republican policies are proving to be devastating for families across the country, especially El Paso. The budget plan they voted for last week will slash Medicaid, and those cuts won’t just impact seniors and children on Medicaid, but it will mean we’ll lose healthcare jobs, providers and services in order to give billionaires big tax breaks.

“The last few weeks haven’t been the beginning of a golden age – they’ve been nothing short of disastrous.”

Today’s statement follows a previous statement released by Rep. Escobar, Mayor Johnson, County Judge Samaniego, and business leaders on the tariffs.
